Tamping
09-4X Dynamic Tamping Express

The interaction between rising volumes of transport and higher quality track maintenance in ever shrinking track possessions pushes the development of track maintenance machine towards ever higher outputs.

The productivity can therefore only be influenced by a continuous length of track possession, without interruptions of work caused by passing trains, and the output capacity of the machine.

Every maintenance operation on the track requires a range of work processes which must be co-ordinated together as efficiently as possible. The better the work technologies act together, the higher the achievable work output, the quality of work and ultimately the cost-efficiency will be.

The introduction onto the market of the 09-4X Dynamic Tamping Express, continuous action 4-tie tamping machine with integrated track stabilisation is setting a new standard in cost-efficient tamping of railway tracks.

In a class of its own

The 09-4X Dynamic Tamping Express is the result of long years of operating experience gained with the 09-3X Tamping Express and further development of the continuous-action tamping technology which has brought a further increase in output and higher quality of work.

For the maintenance of lines with a high density of traffic, this brings a new definition of maintenance speed.

The 09-4X Dynamic Tamping Express is based on the working principle of the 09 series, i.e. the subframe is separate from the main frame. The main frame of the machine travels forward continuously while the track is corrected in static state and therefore with optimum quality. The forward motion of the work units is performed with maximum acceleration. (Cyclic tamping is also possible, if required.)

The new features of the 09-4X Dynamic Tamping Express are the four-tie track tamping units which for the first time enable four ties to be tamped in one cycle.

Additionally the units are in split design so that, if required, in the case of irregular tie spacing, work can be performed as a two-tie or single tie tamping machine.

Optimum combination of work processes- tamping and consolidating in one machine group

Immediately after the lifting, lining and tamping process, the machine leaves behind an excellent track geometry. The subsequent application of the stabilising units achieves a perfection condition of the track geometry, as well as compacting the ballast, with a simultaneous increase of the track's resistance to lateral displacement. This produces absolute uniformity in the treatment of the track.

Proven working quality thanks to Plasser & Theurer tamping technology

  • optimised squeeze time
  • ideal vibration frequency 35 Hz
  • directional, linear oscillation
Stabilising units

The two stabilising units positioned under the frame of the trailer are designed so that only horizontal vibrating forces are generated. The vibration frequency is fully adjustable from 0 to 42 Hz. An oscillation amplitude measuring device ensures the ideal setting of the frequency.

In the event of a standstill of the machine during working operation of the stabiliser, the vibration drive will be stopped automatically. When work is resumed, it will be switched on again automatically. Two hydraulic cylinders apply the adjustable vertical load onto the track.

The machine is fitted with hydraulic manoeuvring devices to place the stabilising units onto the track at the start of work.

Advantages of the 09-4X Dynamic Tamping Express
  • An increase in the working speed up to 2,600 m/h
  • Highest quality of tamping thanks to Plasser & Theurer tamping technology
  • Uniform quality of work due to 4-tie tamping
  • Flexible application with 1-tie, 2-tie or 4-tie tamping
  • Minimum site occupation
  • Better utilisation of the track possessions
  • Further relief for the operating department
  • Lower administrative and personnel costs
  • Controlled anticipation of the initial settlements following tamping work by the dynamic track stabilisation
  • A rise in the track's resistance to lateral displacement after tamping
  • This machine leaves behind a finished, optimised and durable track
