Highlights

  • Proven stabilizer technology specifically modified for the North American market
  • Stabilization ensures homogeneous ballast compaction and great lateral track strength reducing the need for slow orders after tamping.
  • Unique design allows to transport the stabilizer by truck which ensures high flexibility
  • New upgrade kits allow the unmanned operation of the stabilizer following an in depended lead vehicle such as the GRM3000T or other tampers

The PTS dynamic track stabilizer has been a firm feature of maintenance strategies all over the world for almost 40 years. The positive effect of this technology on the durability of the track geometry has been proven in various studies.

The weight of the PTS90C has been reduced. Moreover, the counterweights with 3,100 pounds each, providing the load required for track stabilization, can be removed for transporting by truck using a crane. As a result, the machine can be easily loaded, as costs and logistics required for super loads are not needed.

Use of well proven components

The heavy-duty stabilizing units are well-proven components also used on machines of the DYNACAT series or on the PTS62 stabilizers. Powered hydraulically, they can work on plain tracks and turnouts. During working operation and track travel both axles of the PTS90C are powered hydrostatically. Current research results shows that dynamic track stabilizers produce similar or greater increase in lateral tie resistance than slow order tonnage. These results do not vary between the PTS90C or the PTS62.

In the development, particular attention was paid to ergonomic design. All operating controls are incorporated in the armrests of the operator‘s seat. The monitor showing the measured values is located directly within the operator‘s field of view. Moreover, diagnostics and service data can be accessed from the workplace.

Additional cabin

A further innovation for the PTS90C is the rear cabin for reverse track travel. It is equipped with all operating controls for track travel in reverse. This ensures optimum visibility for travel in both directions. Both cabins are equipped with air-conditioning and heating and can be accessed via safe access steps.

Measuring Equipment

Near the PTS90C stabilizer units, one each non-contacting displacement sensor monitors the vertical position of the left and right rail in relation to the main frame of the machine.

One each slope sensor monitors the crosslevel/superelevation at each end of the PTS90C. It is mounted on a bridge attached to feeler rods, resting on the front and rear axles.

Additionally, the work speed and the vibration frequency of the PTS90C are monitored.

During the stabilizing process, the following information is displayed on the PLC system screen:

  • Vertical displacement values of each rail
  • Crosslevel/superelevation values in front and after the PTS90C
  • Work speed and vibration frequency

Normally the track settlement is preset by applying the maximum load (down force) to the stabilizer units. If less track settlement is desired, the settlement can be manually adjusted by the operator by decreasing the down force of the stabilizer units onto the track.

Autonomous Stabilizer Upgrade Kit

The Autonomous Stabilizer upgrades the popular Plasser Dynamic Track Stabilizer PTS90C. The upgrade kit consists of two modules. One is installed on the existing stabilizer and the counterpart on an independent lead machine such as a GRM3000T. Hereby, the stabilizer can be fully controlled by the lead machine operator and requires no additional operator anymore.  The Autonomous Stabilizer upgrade keeps headcount low and performance high, while radar safety solutions ensure the safe operation on track. Field tests in 2022 proved the feasibility and safety of the new upgrade kit and delivered the expected results. This new upgrade kit supports the industry’s push towards precision scheduled railroading by improving efficiency, safety, and versatility during surfacing actions.
